The School of Life Science was founded in Beijing in 1958 by Dr. Bei Shizhang，a late renowned scientist with emphasis on Biophysics at beginning and has flourished in many branches of biological sciences later on. The new School of Life Science was established in Hefei, Anhui province in 1998, and the founding dean was Professor Shi Yunyu, a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. This School consists of four departments namely, Molecular & Cell Biology; Neurobiology & Biophysics, Systems Biology and Biomedicine & Biotechnology. As a part of School institutions, the School of Life Science currently is running up a University-wide Center for Laboratory Techniques to support and advance research in life sciences and a Division of Structure and Function of Biomacromolecule in the National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale. In addition, School sets up two practice-based learning sites which are located in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province and Shengjing Lake, Anhui province for conducting student’senvironmental science courses.
At present, there are eighty-seven faculty members in the School of Life Science, fifty-three of them are full professors (including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences、one Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering) and twenty-twoof them are associate professors. All the full professors and associate professors are responsible for teaching and research carried out in this School. They are providing various courses for both undergraduates and postgraduates. The Principal Investigators (PIs) in the School are also running many research projects, including general and key projects from National Science Foundation of China, key projects from the knowledge Innovation Program of Chinese Academy of Sciences; projects of the National Basic Research (973); projects of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863); projects of the Major Program for the Fundamental Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and projects from program of the National Ministry of Science and Technology and many others. More than 60% of the professors of this School are recruited from overseas in recent years. Twenty-two of these professors are awarded by “One Hundred Young Talented People Program” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; six of them are awarded as “Distinguished Young Scientists Fund” from National Natural Science Foundation of China; three of them are honored as “Yangtze River Scholar Award Program" Professors” from Ministry of Education and ten of them are honored as the Knowledge Innovative Program of The Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Presently, about 400 undergraduate students and 400 postgraduate students are enrolled in this School, among them approximately 200 are PhD candidates. Because of the strong backgrounds in life science, our graduates are becoming more influential and making positive impacts in their own fields either in high education or in scientific research both at home and abroad. Some of them have made prominent contributions to science and technology and have been honored by various prestigious awards and medals from academic and public societies. Three doctoral dissertations from our School have been honored as the Awards for National 100 Excellent PhD Thesises. Four doctoral dissertations were honored as the Excellent PhD Thesises of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
